How to avoid damage to your non-stick

Follow these 7 simple steps to avoid some of the common ways your non-stick pan can be damaged:

  1. Avoid using continuous high heat and/or overheating the pan as this can cause discolouration and permanently damage your non-stick surface.
  2. Do not use steel wool, coarse scouring pads or harsh abrasives to clean cookware.
  3. Do not store food in cookware after cooking, particularly when salt has been used as this may cause pitting on the surface. Do not leave utensils in cookware during cooking.
  4. Do not use oil sprays on nonstick cookware as the ultra-thin layer of oil will quickly burn onto the nonstick surface when the cookware is heated. To use oil sprays for flavour, lightly spray the food before adding to the preheated cookware.
  5. Although minor scratches will not impair the performance of nonstick cookware, the use of sharp metal kitchen utensils such as forks, knives or whisks is not recommended.
  6. Do not allow cookware to boil dry and never leave empty cookware on a hot burner.
  7. Do not use oven cleaners to clean cookware, as these are not designed for this purpose and will ruin the cookware.

Cleaning and storing

How to clean non-stick

When you first use one your Anolon non-stick pan, it will work so well (and make clean up so easily) that you may think that all you need to do is wipe it out with a paper towel!

Though we would love for that to be the case, cleaning your pan thoroughly is really important to prevent a build-up of food over time that can cause damage to your non-stick. If grease particles are left on the non-stick surface, they can burn when the cookware is next heated, causing stains and scorching to your pan’s interior, reducing the effectiveness of the non-stick surface.

Follow these simple steps to keep your pan looking beautiful and performing perfectly:

  • Carefully wipe off spills which occur during cooking immediately for easier clean up later.
  • Always allow cookware to cool down after use and before cleaning, by removing cookware from the heat source and let it cool on a heat resistant surface or trivet.
  • Do not pour cold water into hot cookware as it may cause it to warp, or hot liquids to splatter
  • Before washing, carefully wipe out any food residue or grease particles with a paper towel.
  • Using a cleaning brush (or a mesh pad specifically labelled as being suitable for nonstick surfaces), wash cookware thoroughly after use with mild dishwashing detergent and hot (not boiling) water to remove all traces of food or grease particles.
  • I have burnt food onto my cookware

If your cookware has dried or burnt on food deposits that you can’t seem to clean off, try this simple solution to soften food before washing:

  • Partially fill the pan with 3 parts water to one part detergent or vinegar
  • Bring the pan to the boil
  • Turn off the heat source and set aside for a period to cool
  • Wash the pan with mild dishwashing detergent and hot (not boiling) water using a cleaning brush or a non-abrasive mesh pad.

There is a spotted white film on my pan

A spotted white film may form on your cookware which is caused by minerals in water, or from starch in food. This will not impair the performance of your pan, and can usually be removed by rubbing with a sponge dipped in lemon juice or vinegar.

Storage

Always ensure cookware is dried thoroughly before storing away.
It is recommended that paper towel is placed between cookware which may assist in preventing scratches to the surfaces during storage.

Cooktop Use

  • It is important to select the right size cookware for the cooking task and the right size burner to suit the cookware you are using. Ensure cookware is stable on the cooktop surface or trivet to prevent tipping.
  • Continuous high heat and/or overheating may shorten the life of cookware, cause discoloration and damage non-stick surfaces. For optimum results start the cooking process on high for 1 to 2 minutes, then reduce the heat to low to medium as this will spread the heat evenly, eliminating hot spots which may burn food.
  • Position cookware so that handles are not over other hot burners and do not allow handles to extend beyond the edge of the cooktop, as these may be in easy reach of children or enable the cookware to be knocked off the cooktop.
  • Do not make a double boiler out of cookware that are not designed for this purpose.

  • Before first use and after each use, holding the handle carefully hand wash each knife separately in warm soapy water and rinse.
  • Do not allow knives to soak for long periods of time and carefully dry knives thoroughly with a clean, soft tea towel before storing them
  • Do not use steel wool or harsh abrasives to clean knives.
  • Do not immerse knife blocks or sheaths in water.

Dishwasher Use

  • Anolon knives are not dishwasher safe.
  • Dishwasher use will impair the quality of the knives and could cause damage or discoloration of the handle.

Knife Blocks, Sheathes & Storage

Always store knives in a knife block or sheath to protect the cutting edge and prevent personal injury.
When placing knives in the knife block, care should be taken with the blade as this could damage the block and blunt your knives.
To clean your block, use a cloth rinsed in warm water and mild dishwashing detergent to wipe the exterior of the knife block or sheath, then dry with a clean, soft towel. Please do not use steel wool, coarse scouring pads or harsh abrasives to clean knife blocks or sheaths.

My knives are blunt, what should I do?

A sharp knife is a safe knife. A dull knife requires excessive pressure when cutting which increases the likelihood of injury.

Always ensure the knife is clean before sharpening.

Anolon 2 Stage wet stone sharpener

Use an Anolon 2 Stage Sharpener either before or after each use of the knife to daily hone the blade and maintain the edge.

Anolon 3 stage wet stone sharpener

  • Simply fill the water chamber and gently pull the blade through the ceramic wheels. Repeat in each wheel following from 1 to 3.

Is non-stick harmful for my health?

Anolon is dedicated to delivering premium quality non-stick cookware to help you get the best results in the kitchen. Part of this commitment is ensuring Anolon non-stick is completely safe & non-toxic, and not harmful to your health.

Regulatory agencies worldwide have concluded that PTFE non-stick manufactured without the use of the component called PFOA is not a risk to consumers.

All Anolon non-stick is completely PFOA free. DuPont, the manufacturer of the non-stick coating on Anolon only use non-stick technologies that make PTFE non-stick without PFOA.

PTFE is short for polytetrafluoroethylene, which is a slippery, tough and non-flammable synthetic material known as the non-stick coating on a pan. PFOA is short for perfluorooctanoic acid, a synthetic chemical compound that, in the past, was used as a component of PTFE.

DuPont non-stick coatings are formulated to resist peeling or chipping with normal use. However, in the event that particles of DuPont non-stick are accidentally eaten, there is no cause for concern. DuPont non-stick is non-toxic and inert. If accidentally eaten, the non-stick particles will pass directly through the body and will not be absorbed.

PTFE non-stick coatings have been in the market for over 7 decades with a superb record of consumer safety.

What cooking utensils should I use?

While Anolon non-stick is extremely durable and is metal utensil safe, wooden or heat resistant nylon cooking utensils such as those available in the Anolon range page are recommended to prevent scratches.
