Where to for Brunch?

Solve this age-old dilemma with our state-by-state breakdown of where to go for the best eggs, avo and juice combos.

Victoria

North Fitzroy Social, Fitzroy, Melbourne

If you don’t live in Melbourne, book a flight and head directly to North Fitzroy Social for the Cloud Egg Soufflé. You’ll understand when you get a load of the towering egg white, runny fontina and egg centre, wilted spinach and sourdough. Sit at the street-facing counter and watch the world go by.

Wide Open Road, Brunswick, Melbourne

For a hearty brunch in the heart of Brunswick, start with the Cinnamon and Lemon Crumpets with honey, pistachios and mascarpone and a bottle of the house Prosecco and go from there! Don’t blame us if you stay well into the night.

New South Wales

Burnt Orange, Mosman, Sydney

Book a spot on the veranda and your reward is peaceful, panoramic views of Sydney Harbour. From this angle (the quiet side), it’s almost like you’re in a bushy remote hideaway – not a bustling metropolis. A great place to take your mum or your lover. Order the Buttermilk Pancakes with strawberries and ricotta.

Pilgrims, Cronulla, Sydney

See a different side of Sydney when you head to the gorgeous southern beaches and Pilgrims vegetarian cafe. It’s hard not to get caught up the Shire’s relaxed, lazy Sunday vibe. We say go the whole hog and get the Full Breakfast with homemade baked beans and local free range eggs.

Queensland

Kiss the Berry, South Bank, Brisbane

Sit in the sunshine at South Bank with a Kiss The Berry acai bowl and it’s like you’re in the Brazilian rainforest. A good plan is to run the Brisbane riverloop, then refuel with the Watermelon Split bowl. Tastes unbelievable (like fruit sorbet) and you’ll feel like you’re doing your body a massive favour.

Pineapple Express Superfood Cafe, Hamilton, Brisbane

On the other side of the river at Portside is another delicious bowl loaded with good stuff. Order the Green Breakfast Bowl with kale, broccolini, avocado, sunflower seeds, dukkah, chilli to taste, cherry bliss tomatoes and poached egg. Pineapple Express devotees (it’s like a cult) swear by them.

South Australia

Zest Cafe Gallery, Glenelg, Adelaide

A sunny local fave in a quiet street off the main drag in Glenelg. For something different, go for ‘the Hottie’ – a spinach, basil and pecorino risotto cake with chorizo and tomato and red capsicum salsa, served with ciabatta.

Pickle in the Middle, Unley, Adelaide

This cheerful diner on Adelaide’s city-fringe is like a kooky shrine to – you guessed it – pickles! Try the amazing Beet-Cured Salmon with lentil and seed crispbread, herbed labne, a soft-boiled egg, beetroot that’s topped with house made Iranian-spiced pickled onion. Still having cravings…

Western Australia

Il Lido Italian Canteen, Cottlesloe Beach, Perth

After a dip in the Indian Ocean, feast on fresh pastries at this place, which specialises in “cucina povera” (Italian peasant food). Il Lido’s Warm Amaro Cake is once tasted, never forgotten. Just another perfect morning in Perth!

Riverside at Woodbridge, Woodbridge, Perth

You can catch a boat straight to this waterfront cafe, which is so pretty people get married here. Across the Swan River, you can even see grape vines draped across the banks. Instagram this and the delectable Potato Rosti with Smoked Salmon. Just another perfect morning in Perth!

Tasmania

Stillwater, Launceston

In a historic old mill on the banks of the Tamar River, you’ll find Stillwater – atmospheric and inviting with a menu that’s big on local produce. Savour the Rye Waffles with cold smoked Huon salmon, dill cucumber, poached egg and seeded mustard crème fraiche.

Machine Laundry Cafe, Hobart

If you’re headed to MONA or the Salamanca Markets, you’ll need sustenance. Machine’s Hotcakes or Eggs Benedict are superb, as you would expect from a state which is leading the way in dining options these days.
